Engine decode question

I just bought a 1967 camaro and was told the engine was a LT1 Corvette motor. How can I verify. Here are the numbers.

Block 3970010
Head 16J251688 & V0322CMJ
GM35 by cast number?

Unhappy Re: Engine decode question

Block "CMJ" = '75 Chevelle and Monte 145hp/350 2-barrel, automatic, NB2.

Also '74/'76, 350, t400 Police, 4-barrel, in the Big cars and

'80, 305 auto, Big cars and Camaro

I just hope it isn't a 305!!

And I am not finding a -688 head?????

Re: Engine decode question

I don't see a list for a 305 using the 010 block, so it should be the full size motor. Matches with the partial VIN you have.

1 = Chevy
6 =1976
J = Janesville (made big cars)
251688 = the sequence number for the big car it was installed in.

Re: Engine decode question

Hard to read but the head may be 668. The VIN is 124377H152807.

Re: Engine decode question

That doesn't really matter, just means it was a full-size 20 cars earlier off the line. You already knew the engine wasn't original to the car.

I assuming your VIN is actually 124377N152807. No "H" plant for Camaros.

Re: Engine decode question

I checked the VIN and N is correct. As stated based on head stamp, this is a 76' year production engine but still has the point distribitor and coil. I thought HEI came in around 74' ? What qualifies and engine to be a LT1?

Re: Engine decode question

Charles,
If the engine has been rebuilt, there is no real way of telling what you have without taking it apart and looking. The 010 block is your basic 4" bore 350 block that was used for about 30 years.
If it has never been rebuilt, then its one of the two listed above.
