305/350?

i bought a 91 rs 305tbi. was told the car might have a 350 swapped in it. how can i find out for sure what engine is in the car? also the car runs like its not getting enough fuel. it likes to die when you rev it. i have to rev it real slow to get it to redline. but at normal acceleration it kills. could the problem be that the car does have a 350 in it and the computer is set up for a 305 still? and would a computer from a truck 350tbi work?

Re: 305/350?

there is no way of telling just by looking, i can tell you one thing that year in the rs they only came with a 305/700r4 to find out you can take the hood off look behind the drivers side head on the block(you may have to jack up the back of the trans) there should be a line of numbers post them on this thread and I could tell you what it is.as for the issue with its running sounds like the timing but im not an expert on fuel injection setups. the same thing your going through i went through on my 85 bird I was told it was a 350 2 months later I ran the numbers and found out it was a 305 people will do anything to sell a car. but thats ok its now got a 450 horse 383 in it.

Post back the letters at the end of the VIN number string that should either be on a smalldeck boss right above the pass. side top water pump bolt or on a little pad right above the middle of the top of the water pump pulley and hopefully we can tell you what the block started off life as.

Re: 305/350?

I was going to suggest that to but in order to do that you would have to take that giant pass side serpentine bracket apart (or at least I had to with my 85) there big and cover up any thing on the front of the block and i didnt know how comfortable he would be doing that. but then agian that might be better if you dont have help to take off the hood.

Re: 305/350?

i looked for numbers on my engine. the area's i've been told are hard to get to. anyway i did find some. by the oil filter there is a small 33. on the block on the drivers side in the middle, in big numbers, upside down is a 627. on the front of the block there is a 638. these were the only numbers i could get to so far. i was looking at a listing of engine numbers and it said something about the last three numbers of an engine can be on other parts of the engine. 2 numbers i saw ended in a 627 and 638. the 627 was listed as a 305 and the 638 was listed as a 350. both of these numbers are on my block? i bought an inspection mirror, but its still hard to look at the back of the engine. help
