Question Wiring help with ZZ4 engine in 67 RS

I need some help. With the help of my brother and Dad, I just put in a new ZZ4 engine in my 67 RS and am having problems getting it started. We have a couple wiring issues that we can't figure out. One of the wires we don't know how to hook up is the yellow wire from the starter solenoid. We thought that it might get tied into the braided wire that hooks up to the distributor, but when we do that, the connection smokes when we turn on the key. Any idea where that yellow wire goes?

We also are not sure how to hook up the alternator. The connection we have has 4 wires, labeled with an F, P, S, and O (I think) and we are not sure which wires to use and where.

One last question, we are not sure if the neutral/safety switch on the transmission has to be hooked up or not. We can't find the purple wires that go to the switch. Any ideas on that?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!!!

Re: Wiring help with ZZ4 engine in 67 RS

welcome..
the distributor wiring thing is easy- don't hook up the yellow wire or the braided wire. run a new wire from a terminal on the fuse box labeled "ign" to the "BAT" terminal on the distributor.
can't really help on the alternator, since i don't know what type you are running. is it the stock alternator or a newer style internal regulator?
and if it is a newer alternator, is it the older 10 or 12SI series with a flat plug with 2 wires, or a newer style CS alternator with a smaller case that has 4 wires?
and the neutral safety switch doesn't "have" to be hooked up. but it is a good idea. what kind of shifter setup are you using- column or floor shift? manual or auto trans?

you don't plan sincerity.
you have to make it up on the spot.

wanna hear about 20 years ago when i was too smart to know any better?

Re: Wiring help with ZZ4 engine in 67 RS

Thanks for the quick reply novaderrik. We will run the wire from the fusebox like you said - what gauge should we use - 12 or something smaller?

The alternator is the newer style internal regulator that came with the turn-key ZZ4 and it has 4 wires. Do we need to buy an assembly that bypasses the old voltage regulator? I think that Classic Industries has that part... part # CA27557 if I am correct.

We would like to hook up the neutral safety switch. Do you know where we can find the 2 purple wires that should go down to the neutral safety switch? I have a floor shift and it is a manual 4 speed.

One last question - the 12GA PPL wire going to the starter - it should be on the small post, right?

Thanks again for your help - I am not a very smart "sparkie", but I am trying to learn...

Re: Wiring help with ZZ4 engine in 67 RS

If I remember correctly - the two small posts on the solenoid are labelled "S' and "R". The "R" is the one closest to the engine block and stands for "Run". The purple wire goes to "R". The yellow wire goes to "S" if you're still using a points style distributor. It provides a full 12 volts to the coil while cranking only. If you have an HEI dist, you don't need the yellow wire.

The big post on the solenoid is for the + batt cable.
