Wiring Question...

Ok, first let me say i have learned a ton about working on these cars over the past 3 years. And feel pretty confident doing a lot of things myself on them. BUT...when it comes to wiring i am clueless. I am trying to freshen up some of the wiring in my 69 Firebird and have a question. There is a large gauge wire that runs directly from the altenator to the starter. That doesnt seem right to me. Not like that on my Camaro. And of course there is the wire running directly from positive battery terminal to starter. Why would there be one from altenator to starter??

Re: Wiring Question...

My AAW update kit does it that way (large gage wire from alt to starter) to charge the battery back through the battery cable, rather than using a feed to the junction block and then charging the battery through the 14 gage wire off the J-block.

Maybe Pontiac ran it the same way?

Re: Wiring Question...

Could be a pontiac thing. Thats part of the problem.. im not real familiar with Pontiac "stuff". Seems strange to me how Chevy and Pontiac are so different in so many ways.

Re: Wiring Question...

Check the condition of the wire. If it appears to be of the same age as the reminder, it would be OE.

A once owned 70 GTO had a #10 red wire from the alt to the starter for battery charging and it was OE. But, the alt & starter are on the same side of the engine, so its a short run.

Re: Wiring Question...

Id check out a wiring diagram for the pontiac. Sounds like its probably right though. Sounds like they have used the solinoid as its junction block.. more than one way to skin a cat...
