1 wire alt

I have a 67 camaro 1 wire alt. does the clip have to be plug in to the alt to work or can I leave it unplug

If you really have a one wire alternator, you only need one wire, the red one

if it is a 1 wire alt and you plug it in. you blow out the alt with the key on.usually when a alt company does 1 they put a plug over the other 2 prongs so no one can plug it in on mistake.

Smokey, what clip are you referring to? The firewall clip or the wire that would normally clip on a standard internal regulator type alternator? IMO the one wire alternators are really not worth it to me. They only begin to charge when you reach a certain rpm, usually 1000rpm. If you have any kind of aftermarket stereo with amps then you are going to experience problems. The don't want to charge at idle. Just my opinion. You may have better luck than me.

Some 1 wire alternators are truely one wire only, others (like some models of Powermaster) can be 1 or 3 wired. Really depends on who made the alternator.
