Dome & Courtesy light problem

Getting close to the finish of restoration on my 69 Z28. Hooked battery up today to check all electrical. Seems everythings fine except the dome and courtesy lights will not go off. Disconected both door jamb switches with no change. Can there be any other problem except the headlight switch? It works the headlights fine and will dim the dash lights. Also does click when turned completely to the left in the position to turn the courtesy and dome light on. Help!

Re: Dome & Courtesy light problem

Well, disconnect the plug on the headlight switch and see if they go off?

At it's most basic, you're problem is a ground on the white wire.
One would hope it was happening at one of the 3 switches (2 door and the headlight switch) but it could be anywhere.

Re: Dome & Courtesy light problem

Jim if I unplug the plug from the switch are you saying that if the lights go out then the problem has to be in the switch and if they stay on that it probably is a ground?

yes all interior lights get positves all the time. when you open door or turn on headlight switch it provides ground to the lights. or a wire somewhere is grounded in the circuit.

yes

Tho one would hope not, it could be a place anywhere on that white wire where the insulation got nicked and it's grounding out. Most likely tho, it's one of the 3 switches. How did you test the door switches? Did you take the wires off the back (real hard to reach!)? or unscrew the switch from the door?

Do you have only the roof light, or do you have underdash lights or a console light?

Jim
I have roof and underdash lights no console. I unscrewed the doorjamb switches, pulled them out and then disconnected the wires frmthe back.

Re: Dome & Courtesy light problem

JimM, on my vert the courtesy lights were not hooked up when I bought it. The jam switches are in, but the socket on the passenger side just hangs there. I can't seem to find the drivers side bulb socket.

A couple of questions: Does the grounding take place when the socket is in the dash keeper? Where does the drivers side socket get placed in (under) the dash?

- Also - I did try hooking up the console courtesy, and it works fine, but will not turn off when the doors are closed.

Thanks!

Re: Dome & Courtesy light problem

I finally found my problem. All three switches were fine. One of the courtesy light sockets was grounded where it goes in the mount. Thanks guys for the help.

Re: Dome & Courtesy light problem

Strick, on the verts (or coupes with the under dash lights) the sockets are part of the accessory courtesy light harness. This is a separate peice that plugs in above the drivers side kick panel and runs across the dash side to side. It contains both sockets and the pass side switch wire. The sockets have 2 wires (orange and white) and are not grounded.

The sockets plug into metal brackets (reproduced) that attach to the lower edge of the dash with a sheet metal screw.

I'm a lil fuzzy on where the pass side switch wire on a coupe comes from, I only do topless!

DUDE................................I am topless guy too!

Thanks for the info! I did find the drivers side socket tucked behind the kick panel. Now to find out why they are staying 'ON'.
