one wire

Is there a way to tell the difference between a one wire alternator and a three wire alternator?

Re: one wire

From the outside, not really. The differences are in the regulator. Most 1 wires will have a rubber plug over the 2 small terminals. Some powermaster alts can be wired either way 1 or 3 wire. There are no "original factory" 1 wires that I know of.

Re: one wire

Beware that the term 3-wire can mean one of several different alternators. The original external regulator setup was a "3-wire" setup. The 10SI and 12SI alternators are also 3-wire. The modern CS alternators are actually 5 wire alternators, but generally, only 3 wires are use. So, you guessed it, those too are referred to as 3-wire alternators.

Now I wish I had a link to a series of imiges someone posted a while back showing what all three looked like. Seems like it was a recent post also.
