Battery gone??

I had my battery on a 25 amp charger and it started to boil. It still does not show charge - only 10.3 volts. What does it mean?

I assume I need a new battery. Since my car is not stock, how many amps do I need? Also, would a stronger battery help with a difficult starter when the car is hot? The engine is some unknown chevy smallblock that was dropped into my firebird.

thx

Re: Battery gone??

Problems could be:
1. Meter needs calibrating
2. Battery charger meter is broken
3. Battery in a very low state of charge to begin
4. Battery is toast

With charger on battery and recharging, if battery takes more than 16 volts to recharge, battery is toast. However, a good automatic charger would adjust/lower the output voltage to prevent boiling.

Seeing bubbles is okay and the battery side is warm to the touch. Eventually, the battery will become fully charged. But, if there is a mist above the battery and the side is hot, forget it, get another battery.

My Rule-Of-Thumb is 2 CCA's for every cubic inch. Also, large cables, 1 AWG, and clean connections go hand-in-hand.

Re: Battery gone??

Size of wire, 1 American Wire Gauge, bare wire diameter is just shy of 5/16 inch.

Thanks, Tim, you beat me to it.

Re: Battery gone??

I gave you 15 minutes.

I was just reading that wikipedia link, I didn't know for 5 to 14 laid side by side that the gauge= number per inch in solid copper conductor. Cool. 8 pieces of solid 8 bare side by side 1 inch. A dummy like me can remember that. Remembering it only works for 5 to 14 is the hard part.

Re: Battery gone??

Cells can short internally and when you try to charge them they'll get hotter than heck. I suspect that is what has happened to yours.

Re: Battery gone??

I've had a red-top Optima in my 68 for 3 years now. Minimal starting and I remember to charge it about once every 6 weeks or so. So far it hasn't failed me. Since last year I've got a red-top in my 02 Camaro and my wife's Buick. So far its been a smooth ride.

Others have bashed the Optimas, but I know several people first hand that use them. One friend of mine had a yellow top that flat gave up the gohst after 30 months. Not sure what to make of that. To me, just avoiding battery puke made it worth the money.
