68 alternator wiring question

I have a 68 camaro and i recently bought an alternator off of ebay. I was going to do the 1 wire thing but thought i will just stick with my 3 wire. Well when my new one came it has 3 wires all right but the plug is not the same.

I bought the right plug from baxters but am not sure which wires to connect together?

Just the 2 smaller wires

Re: 68 alternator wiring question

If the new alternator has a flat two prong connector then it is an internally regulated alternator. If the alt has a square two wire plug then it is an externally regulated alt.

The above link is to an internally regulated alternator.

The above link is to a harness for an externally regulated alternator

Re: 68 alternator wiring question

You can easily convert a camaro to use an internal regulated alternator.
There are 2 articles on how to do it in the basics sticky at the top of the electrical forum.

Short version:
Correctly splice on the pigtail connector for the alternator mentioned above.
remove the regulator connector from the regulator.
Install a jumper wire to connect the top and bottom wires on that connector
Install another jumper to connect the middle 2 wires.

They make a prebuilt connector that will plug into the regulator harness connector and do this. Not sure where to find it tho.
