Ignition Swith Locked ... Can't get it to budge ...

Thanks for the help guys ...

While trying to chase down some of my electrical issues of this all new build, I've managed to lock up the dask mounted iginition switch ...

It's locked in the off position and I cann't get it to budge in either direction ...

Maybe the trans safety solenoid locked up the ignition ...

Any ideas ...

Not installed. Wiggle the key in the ign switch.

Old ign key? Worn pretty good? Insert key and push down on the key to help push the tumblers into their correct position to release. WD40 into the keyhole?

Re: Ignition Swith Locked ... Can't get it to budge ...

Thanks Everett ...

I'm not sure why it's locked up ... it's a brand new ignition and key set, I've only had the key in it a few times ...

will pressing either of the two small holes in with a paper clip help to free it?

Not sure if the 68 has a locking wheel like 69 but if so maybe you have pressure on the wheel. Turn the wheel hard one way or the other while turning the key.

Re: Ignition Swith Locked ... Can't get it to budge ...

You can try the paper clip Tim, but chances are it won't budge with that.
That is for removal of the whole cylinder you know.

If it does free up, I would sure take it out and inspect. Do you have more than one key if it is new?

If all else fails, well a mobile locksmith would be rational b/c there is no way to get the ign out unless you are able to turn it to the left.

To remove the lock cylinder, place the key in the ignition lock and turn to the accessory position. Insert a paper Clip in the small hole to depress a button in the ignition switch. Keep turning the key counterclockwise and the lock will come out.
I wish I lived nearby. I would be happy to remove it for you.

Re: Ignition Swith Locked ... Can't get it to budge ...

Ignition switch for a '68 is in the dash, there is no locking wheel as in a '69 because sw is in the dash, not on the column.

One has to remove the tumbler first to allow the bezel nut to be removed to drop out the ign sw from behind the dash. This is the purpose of the 'paper clip hole' in the tumbler.

As you turn to ACC position with the key installed, push in on the paper clip to release the detant ball and tumbler will unscrew from the body. Then you can remove/unscrew the bezel nut.

Once the the tumbler is out, insert the key and look at the tumblers, one of longer length will be the clue to the reason why it won't turn, or a burr in the switch body from turning the key.

You beat me, Tory.

Hi Everett,
I have had my 68 Camaro apart so many times, this was just an automatic reaction.
However, you were more thorough in your description.

Putting paper clip will do nothing unless the ignition can be rotated to the ACC position....then the key and ignition core can be removed. You need to try and jiggle the key in and out,up and down while trying to rotate the key either way. A little WD40 in the key slot (little amount) should help too.

Re: Ignition Swith Locked ... Can't get it to budge ...

Man,

I've WD40 and wiggled until my fingers are almost raw and this thing will not budge ...

That really sucks seeing how it was brand new ...

I'll probably have to try and drill it out so that I can reuse the switch ...

Re: Ignition Swith Locked ... Can't get it to budge ...

So you guys don't think this ignition is locked up due to the Solenoid ?

I've removed the ignition ... can I send power to it and try to Unlock the Solenoid ?

Is this possible ?

Re: Ignition Swith Locked ... Can't get it to budge ...

Ign switch is strictly a mechanical switch. I would suspect the tumbler(s) is/are jammed in the body. I don't think there is a solenoid, but hey, try it. Nothing to lose at this point.

I think the famous phrase from the Car Rental woman from Planes, Trains and Automobiles comes to mind as she asks Steve Martin for his rental agreement and he has no agreement. She replies, "You're f-iretr-ucked."

The next step would be to use a sliding hammer and screw it into the tumbler and remove the tumbler, only after disconnecting the battery and switch connector on the back of the ign switch.

Maybe others have a better way of removing the stuck tumbler..........I'd wait for others to give their suggestions.

Re: Ignition Swith Locked ... Can't get it to budge ...

Yea ... I don't think there is a solenoid in the switch either ...

I guess I'll just drill this bad boy out and get another ...

Re: Ignition Swith Locked ... Can't get it to budge ...

There is nothing on the back but 12g wires.
Take your speedo cluster out to get to the back of the ign switch to see for yourself, especially if you go at it with a drill, because you will be replacing the whole switch if you drill it out from the front.

I still say a mobile locksmith is your best option. You have a stubborn tumbler and that is what they have experience in.
