Question Wiper system/wire questions.

I have been reading about the wiper motor problems that some are having and had a few questions on my 69. Need to make sure wires are hooked up correctly.

1) I replaced the engine compartment harnesses a few years ago from
Ricks First Gen. and didn't notice until today, after reading about the
wiper motor problems some are having, that the wire colors themselves
are different than what most indicate? For instance, the main wire that
is talked about mostly is the yellow wire. After looking at mine, I noticed that mine is black with a yellow tracer. Is this commen? Were
there different manufacturers that provided harnesses in 69?
Assy. manual shows yellow, not black with yellow stipe.

My wires are connected in this order coming out of the harness:
back 2 wire connector has black with yellow tracer line in top position
with split off wire going to top position in the 2 wire connector at the
washer pump. There is a light blue wire coming from the harness to
the bottom position in the back 2 wire connector and there is a black
single wire connector just below the 2 wire connector. There is a dark
blue wire coming from the harness going to the bottom position at the
washer pump. I know this might sound trivial to some, but inquiring
minds want to know. I have a pic to post but don't have that feature.

2) If hooked up correctly why is my washer pump wanting to run all the
time? Nothing but clunk, clunk, clunk. Won't stop. Not that I use car
in the rain (vinyl top), but you know things do happen. Is there
something I can check or do for that washer pump?

Thanks.

Re: Wiper system/wire questions.

I'm thinking you have the black and dark blue wires swapped. Maybe put a voltmeter on em while a helper works the switch?
Remember, zero volts to ground = on with the wipers.

Re: Wiper system/wire questions.

The yellow wire listed in the AIM actually has a black stripe that is not indicated. The loom you have has obviously substituted a black with yellow stripe, most likely due to availability. Regardless, this is your power to the wiper motor.

Forget the RS solenoid connections for non-RS, and refer to the sticky threads or your AIM for the washer pump wiring..

Just a little intimidating... But it's right, too. I should know better than to trust my memory. Dark blue wire is spposed to be washer pump.

Re: Wiper system/wire questions.

Gee, if that's intimidating you, just take your car to an auto electrician!

Seriously, it's quite simple to understand if you take your time to read it.
It's not like hooking up a battery, there are more than 2 different colored wires.

Re: Wiper system/wire questions.

The yellow in your pic is what my black with yellow tracer is correct? So #3 and #5 are connected together. The light blue out of the harness connected to #2. The black single connector out of harness to #1 and the dark blue out of the harness to #4. If that is correct than I'm good. That is how my wires are connected. But that still doesn't tell me why my washer pump stays running when the wipers are on.

I am assuming that is what they have done, yes.

There could be something wrong with the pump. There is a mechanism on it that is supposed to stop it after 1 revolution (4 pumps). I'm thinking a broken spring or something worn within.
There are 2 or 3 small 1/4" or 5/16"AF screws that hold the pump on to the body.
Try taking the pump off and inspecting it.
