Engine won't keep running

Okay,
so I just finished my re-wiring of the car (engine and light harnesses). This car has never been completely together since I've owned it so I must be missing something. When I start the car, the car starts and runs until I release the ignition switch, then it shuts off. I think I don't have 12 volts at the coil except during cranking. Any ideas where the trouble might be?

Wink Re: Engine won't keep running

You need to find the "Key Hot" wire from the switch to the underhood area and connect it to the coil ...
Right now the coil is getting it's voltage only from the cranking circuit (purple wire).
Look for a 'brown' wire that is hot only when the key is in the 'run' (and Not Acc.) position.

Okay so I need to find a brown wire thats hot when the switch is in run, but not ACC. I can't find any brown wires that are not connected to a terminal. How do I locate it? Which harness will it be in?

Thumbs up Re: Engine won't keep running

It should be in the connector harness at the firewall.
You may have to trace the wire from under the dash to the firewall connector to be sure which group it is in.

Re: Engine won't keep running

Does that wire have to be a resistor wire or the points will burn?

If your MSD or Mallory ignition box is hooked up incorrectly, it would cause this same problem.

Re: Engine won't keep running

I found the problem. it was a bad ignition switch. The car was running with a magneto so i guess it didnt show up until I switched back to a distributor. I changed it and the car started right up.

Re: Engine won't keep running

Just had the same thing happen Thursday, had to have it towed home. It would stay running as long as you held the key between run and start. You would have thought there would have been some kind of burnt spot on the back of the switch. At least it was a cheap fix for a change.
