Converting to Relay Powered Headlights

I'm installing two relays to increase voltage to my headlights. Right now they read about 12.2 volts. Nothing new there and I'm okay with the wiring to get the job done. The problem I'm having is getting into the factory harness to make the tap. It's a '68 R/S convert so it has both the vacuum tank and the cocktail shaker in the left front corner, the harness tucks up under both the fender and the core suport making it difficult to get at. I pulled the left front headlight and noticed that at the plug there are 2 black ground wires, 2 tan lowbeam wires, and 2 green highbeam wires there. Did GM run the wiring harness to the left headlight and then simply come off of there to go across and pick up the right headlight because there is only one of each color wire at the right light?? If so, that's the easiest place to splice into the harness to power off the relays. Sure would help if someone had an old harness laying on the workbench.

Yes, the wiring goes to left first than to right.

Re: Converting to Relay Powered Headlights

Thanks Jeff. So if I just splice into both tan wires for low beam, and both green wires for high beam and run those through the two relays I should be in business?

You could just splice into the one wire that feeds the left light and then let it feed the right side just like GM did it.

Re: Converting to Relay Powered Headlights

Finished my conversion to relays powering the headlights. Huge improvement!! Went from 11.8 volts stock, to 13.8 when powered by the relays. A VERY noticable difference.

Yep, now it doesn't feel like I've got shades on at night.
