Minimum wiring to start car?

I know this isn't a Camaro, but I hope someone can help me. I have a 69 AMX that the previous owner hacked up the wiring. All I want to do is be able to start the car and move it around, I don't care about any accessories being powered. Is there a way I can just run new wires to the starter, solenoid etc. and be able to turn the car on and off? The ignition is on the dash. The solenoid is on the fender and it has 2 terminals on it. One labled "S" and one labled "I". Also still retains the points/coil ignition. I'm a novice at electrical stuff, so please keep it simple.

Re: Minimum wiring to start car?

...not an American Motors guy, but the "S" on the solenoid is "start"(starter) side, "I" on solenoid is "ignition" side of solenoid.

Re: Minimum wiring to start car?

It's really simple...

- connect positive battery cable to the big terminal on the starter solenoid

- wire with a switch in the middle between posivite battery terminal and starter solenoid S terminal. This is your START switch.

- wire with a switch in the middle between positive battery terminal and a ballast resistor. This is your RUN switch.

- wire from the other end of the ballast resistor to the + terminal of the coil

- wire from the - terminal of the coil to the points in the distributor

- make sure both switches are OFF

- connect negative battery cable to the engine block

Flip the RUN switch to on, then flip the START switch for a few seconds to run the starter.
