Intermittent 12V Power Loss ??

I drove the Camaro to work yesterday and noticed that initially my voltage gauge showed about 10 volts, then after driving a few miles it went to nearly 14 miles. I was then wondering if the cooler weather was affecting my gauge.
On the way home it was only showing 8 to 10 volts, and occasionally would drop to zero, at which time the car's engine would stumble momentarily.
The battery (about 2 years old) reads at 12.6 volts. The wiring harness throughout the car is new and the alternator was a fresh rebuild about 3 years ago. The rebuilt car now has 2,000 miles on it.
It acts like a wire is coming loose and disconnects occasionally. What do these symptoms point to? I have a multi meter but have to admit that my electrical skills are at novice level.

Thank you in advance for your input.

Re: Intermittent Power Drop ??

If none of the other accessories dimmed or just quit working, I would suspect a loose connection anywhere from the battery pigtail to the junction block nearby to the horn relay buss bar to the firewall connector to the ignition switch and all the grounds, and its pigtail, involved to complete the circuit.

The junction block and buss bar would be the first place I would check to make a good connection is had by all wires and their crimps are in good shape and no broken strands. The problem only arrises while driving, doesn't happen in the driveway?

As a troubleshooting aid, I'd hook up a simple light bulb inside the compartment and hook it to the buss bar. Any difference in brightness and your prepherial vision will notice. Seeing a bulb is better than reading a meter while driving.

No difference, move light further down the circuit and watch. Fusebox?

Of course, you can use your DMM across the battery to measure charging voltage, min 13.5 volts after 10-15 minutes running if ext reg alternator. Internal reg alternator will show 14 volts.

Re: Intermittent 12V Power Loss ??

Thanks for the pointers Everette. This was so easy it's really kind of embarrassing. I started following the wiring and found a screw backed out and the black wire connection on the horn relay loose. Because it is raining today I haven't taken the car for a drive but I am reasonably sure the problem is resolved.
