Wont turn off !

Hey Guys , ive just had a new engine installed in my 69' , its got all the usual goodies, also an MSD 6al set up , dissy and coil. Its all running fine but dosnt turn off now. An auto electrician says that because of the increased spark it trickles thru when ignition is turned off and keeps the motor running.
So what we had to do was put a 4 watt globe spliced into main ignition lead to coil , which draws just enuf from system to let engine stop.
How does all this sound? Has anyone heard of this with the MSD set up?
Im not sure if this is the best outcome, any ideas?
Thanx in advance !

Re: Wont turn off !

Reads like the MSD set-up is not wired correctly or the yellow wire from the starter is wired wrong on the solenoid providing power all the time. Yellow solenoid wire should be connected to "R" terminal on solenoid - only on when in start position.

You might bypass the MSD at the coil with the supplied two jumpers after disconnecting the MSD box from the coil.

Re: Wont turn off !

The problem is the alternator is feeding power to the MSD box when you turn the ignition off. You need to add a diode to the small wire on the alternator. Go to MSD website and they have a tech forum. It explains a run on condition which is what you have.

Re: Wont turn off !

An alternate diode is available from most electronics sources, I get these from Fry's Electronics, aren't expensive.

NTE is the manufacturer, 116 is the actual part, p/n NTE-116. Cathode end, with the silver band, twords the alternator.
