Checking original coil

What is the procedure for checking a coil to find out if it is good to use?

Re: Checking original coil

Ohmmeter across - to + = >2 ohms
Ohmmeter from center tower to - = high resistance, typically 10K ohms or more.
No continuity to coil case/can from any terminal.

If you're bold, you can electrically test it by placing a coil wire in center tower, gap of 1/4 inch or more to test battery negative post, + wire to positive terminal, negative to hand. Or use a momentary push-to-ON button switch.
With secondary gap to negative battery post, take neg wire and touch coil - terminal for a half second. Upon releasing wire from coil, spark should jump.

Re: Checking original coil

A much better test than simply ohms is to remove the coil from the vehicle and have it load tested, Most Auto Zone stores have a load tester, and will test a coil for free. that way, the coil is heated to do the test, which can make for a different outcome from the ohms testing.
