Question First Gen wont start with the switch

Hey guys,
I tried to start my 1967 last night and no luck. it wont even turn over. I did cross the starter over and it cranks fine that way. I checked the switch and it works fine. I also checked the neutral safety switch and it seems fine. I have never had this problem before. It has a 327 with pg and hei distributor. I was thinking it might be a ground but am open for suggestions. I am at work right now and would love some ideas to try when i get home. Thanks

Re: First Gen wont start with the switch

How did you check the switch? When you turn the key, do you get a voltage drop? You may have a connection problem between the battery cable and the starter. Battery cables can go bad and they usually go bad from the inside out. Also, if there is ANY corrostion on the battery terminals, clean it off and then make sure the connections are tight. You don't have to crank down on them. Just tight enough so they don't spin by hand, then give it about another 1/16 of a turn.

Re: First Gen wont start with the switch

Dave,
The starter circuit is 2 parts, the "crank" and the "trigger"

You've all ready tested the crank by jumping the solenoid, that part is fine.
Another worthy test is to try to crank the car with the headlights on.

Headlights dim to nothing = bad starter or dead battery
Headlights dim some, but no cranking = bad solenoid on starter
Headlights don't dim at all = no trigger getting to solenoid

And there's always the "clunk test"

One big loud clunk = bad starter
light clunk, motor tries to turn = dead battery
solenoid buzzing = bad solenoid, loose or burned violet wire, dead battery
not a sound = open violet wire, no trigger power to solenoid.

From your description, Id say you are dealing with "no trigger power on the violet wire."
Could be ignition switch, neutral safety switch, or connections at ignition, console, firewall, or starter itself.

Re: First Gen wont start with the switch

I was thinking it was going to be dash work. I checked all of the connections under the hood. Dash work is the least favorite for me....my big behind doesnt fit under the dash very well

ROTFLMAO!!!

4 bolts to pull the seat, that's what I do before any dash work

Get the top off the console first, it's easier.
Unfortunately, I'm betting you will find the terminal for either the violet, or the red wire burned up on the ignition switch.
