Question HEI ignition wire where is it?

I'm about ready to start my new engine in my 67. I can't seem to find the ignition wire. I've got a new HEI distributor. The car didn't have a distributor in it when I bought it. The only spare wire I can find coming out of the wiring harness under the power brake booster is an orange wire but it doesn't have any voltage, ignition switch on or off. I understand that the orginal ignition wire should have a resistor and should put out about 6 to 8 volts, and I'll need 12 volts for the HEI. I found the starter wire and it works fine. The wiring diagram I have shows a purple wire for the ignition but I don't have one. I guess I could run a wire from the fuse box but I hate to. I know someone out there has an idea. Thanks!

Re: HEI ignition wire where is it?

the stock coil wire should be covered in cloth- that's the wire that only puts out 6-8 volts with the key turned on.
if you find that wire, you could replace the whole wire up to the bulkhead with an HEI wire pulled from a car in the junkyard. it makes for a really clean install, and will only cost a couple of bucks, tops. of course, i don't know what kind of wiring bulkhead a 67 Camaro uses- GM switched the way they wired cars around that time- so you might need to put a different terminal on the wire.

you don't plan sincerity.
you have to make it up on the spot.

wanna hear about 20 years ago when i was too smart to know any better?

Re: HEI ignition wire where is it?

that car was designed to be for a points ignition system. i have the same orange wire on my 81. What u need to do is back track it to find the problem inside the dashboard. could be a broken connection. u never know what other people might have done with the car or how careless people could get. hope this helps.

You can run a wire directly from the IGN terminal on the fuse block under the dash to the BAT terminal on the HEI cap. I don't recall which gauge wire is needed (someone will know), but you don't want to skimp.

Driving a #s-matching Z in the rain..... and lovin' it....

That single orange wire coming out of the harness near the distributor is the power wire for the heater blower. Hope this helps you.

This is exactly how I wired up an HEI on a 71 Malibu I once had!.....I used a length of 14 gauge wire.

I would recommend #12 stranded MTW wire.
