New Wire Harness Problems

I have installed a new front wire harness on my 67 rs convertible and now I can start the car, but turning it off doesn't work with the key. Fortunately, I have a manual trans. Does anyone know how to check this out? The old harness worked fine (in that area anyway). I still have the problem with the tach, but that's not as important as shutting off the car! Any help would be GREAT!
Thanks

Re: New Wire Harness Problems

Sounds like the wire to your distributor is getting full time power off the battery instead of power through the ignition.

Re: New Wire Harness Problems

hmmm, that's a thought. Although, I haven't changed anything there. I will look into that. I don't think that would have anything to do with the tach since it's connected to the coil, do you? I still have an original distributor with points, though I have given serious thought into getting a new distributor. I will try to double check the wiring leads. Thanks for the response.

Re: New Wire Harness Problems

I can't pretend to know electrical systems at all as i don't. I just responded with something I would think about checking, and in process, bumping your post hoping someone w/ more knowledge than I would respond as well. Good luck!

Re: New Wire Harness Problems

With points dist installed, make sure the yellow wire on the solenoid is on the "R" terminal and on the + coil terminal.
Green tach wire should be on - coil terminal.

If you have a 10SI or 12SI (internally regulated alternator), you need the diode installed to kill the excitation to kill the electrical system to stop the engine.

Re: New Wire Harness Problems

Thank you both. I've had my restoration going for some time and it's always something else in line to fix. I just found this site and signed up and am impressed as well as grateful. I'll troubleshoot some more and plan on being a regular to this site!
Thanks again.
