head light adjustment

years ago my dad told me to pull a car up to a garage door to adjust the head lights.i cant remember how close i need to be.any one know?or the best way to adjust the lights.thx much

Twenty-five foot. Low beam hot spot should be two inches to the right of center and two inches down from the crosshair of each lamp transferred height from the car to the door; same height and width.
