starter problem

my camaro will start 20 times in a row, no drag or hasitation at all. then i will hit the key and i get the dreaded grind of death. sometimes 2 or three times in a row before it catches. (very embarrassing) i dont think it is a shim problem, it sounds perfect when it starts right. i dont want to tear up my flexplate.

do you think i need to replace the starter or should i just change the bendix?

all we have locally is NAPA or advance auto. neither one makes a good starter.

Don't stop now!!!

Re: starter problem

It sounds like the starter is on its way out. I would replace the starter before it chunks up the (fly wheel gear)...

Re: starter problem

Usually shims are the answer. The bendix is connected to the solenoid so the starter motor won't engage unless the bendix is fully deployed.
