Powermaster Alternator Question

I bought a Powermaster alternator from Summit that is 1 wire or 3 wire hookup. Is there something special that you need to do to make it a 3 wire hookup? The instructions do not clearly state how to do this. I'm trying to hook this up with the AAW calssic update kit for my 69.

Thanks,
Clint

Re: Powermaster Alternator Question

If your wire harness is set up for a three wire all you have to do is pop off the black cap covering the terminals on the altenater for the plug. Also I had to clock the alternater for my wire to reach the terminals.

Rob,

Thanks for the reply. I have the AAW Classic Update kit and I followed the wiring diagram. It shows a red wire coming off the battery terminal on the alternator to the terminal under the black cap and a brown next to it that goes to the alternator warning light. Does this sound right?

Re: Powermaster Alternator Question

Clint,

My aaw harness had the plug built in to it, so all i had to do was plug it in to the alternater. I would call the guys at AAW and just confirm what you did with the wiring. They are great guys there and will answer all your questions.

Re: Powermaster Alternator Question

Well I figured out my problem. After calling AAW and Powermaster, it seems like I got a alternator with a internal regulator that was jumpered across the spade terminals which prevented me from hooking it up as a 3 wire system. They were confused on how this could of happened but were very helpful. I exchanged the alternator today at Summit for the same part# and this one did not have the jumper. Below is a picture of what the old one looked like.

Re: Powermaster Alternator Question

The one in the picture is meant to be a 1 wire only.
