1969 Camaro SS 396

I just bought a 69 SS and I have an AM Radio with an 8 track tape player , model #91FT221(PART #7307821) , not a stereo multiplex unit. I am trying to figure out the correct wiring for both . My questions are :

1. Does the AM radio work through A FRONT DASH SPEAKER separate
from the tape player ?

2. The tape player is mounted on the console . The kick panels have
speaker grills with no speakers in them and no wiring going to them .
Does the tape player work through the kick panel speaker seperately ?

3. Is there supposed to be a rear speaker or speakers ?

4. I do see two unused two wire wires from the wiring harness from under
the dash coming from the console . I am wondering if these are for the
kick panel speakers.

I would appreciate any help in getting this problem resolved .

Chuck -

First, welcome to Team Camaro!

RPO U57 tape deck is listed as having four speakers, and from what I recall off the top of my head, is separate from the optional AM push button radio and in-dash speaker. The info should be in the 69 Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM), so if no one can answer better before I get home and have the AIM in front of me, I will post what the AIM has on the subject.

Eric,

Thanks , I do not have an Instruction Manual yet , but I will get one .
Until then , I would appreciate any information you can find . If it calls for 4 speakers I would have to put two in the rear package tray .

Eric,

Did you get a chance to check on the speaker problem I am having with my 69 SS. Don't know if the tape player uses 2 front kick panel speakers alone or 4 speakers with 2 in the rear ? Does the AM radio use a seperate front speaker . You mentioned that the RPO
U57 tape deck ( not the multiplex) calls for 4 speakers and you were going to check what the manual had . I ordered an Assembly Manual yesterday.

Thanks,

I got busy last night and didn't get a chance to get the AIM info for you, but...

I did a search here using "U57" and found some info that said either the U57 tape deck or the AM/FM stereo multiplex option used the same four speakers, one in each kick panel and two in the rear shelf. Where the U57 tape deck was mounted depended on whether the car was ordered with the D55 console or not (under dash w/o D55, on rear of console w/ D55). As far as how/where the wiring was run, the AIM should have that info. I will get what I can up here later today.
