What type of alternator with HEI ignition?

Hi all, my alternator went out so I am researching what to replace it with. Here is what I am currently running:

396ci with HEI ignition
no radio
autometer oil and temp gauges
3 wire alternator (not OE)
Voltage regulator is not hooked up

I am considering going back to the factory wiring with an external voltage regulator and a Delco Remy 60 amp alternator from autozone.

Will this set up be sufficient enough to power the HEI ignition?

Thanks!

Yes, use a Wells p/n VR715 voltage regulator, its electronic and plug & play.

Re: What type of alternator with HEI ignition?

Most likely the OEM alternator would be enough, but the VR714 regulator is a nice upgrade. The OEM alternator was a 3-wire alternator with an external regulator. Can you tell us if the small plug on the alternator has pins like this | | or like this _ _ ?

Personally I adopted the CS-130 and used the tech reference (links from the home page of this site) to do it.

Re: What type of alternator with HEI ignition?

The alternator that went bad has a "_ _" type plug (pic). The one I am replacing it with is a "| |" plug (pic).

I went ahead purchased a VR715 voltage regulator so I am going to stick to that plan since I have the parts.
