ammeter gauge

i have a 69 camaro 4 speed non gauge car, i installed the aftermarket wiring harneses and console gauges, all work fine except the ammeter gauge stays pegged at the top of the scale even when the key is off, can anyone shed any light on this, also notice that the generator light on the dash stays very dim even when the car is running, alternator producting 13.98 volt

Re: ammeter gauge

I just did the same thing....I assume the "new harness" included the the new wires with the fuseable links from the fuse block to the front of the car - positive battery terminal on rad. support (behind battery) and the other to the voltage regulator?

Re: ammeter gauge

Your new harness should have included two wires to go from the gauge to the horn relay buss bar and the other wire to the junction block next to the battery.

The OE design ammeter is actually a millivoltmeter and it indicates the amount of voltage between these two points, the length of a #10 AWG from the places mentioned.

If it is a true current meter, then two large gauge wires, min #10 AWG, would be hooked to the meter and one would go to horn relay buss bar to replace the wire going to the battery on the buss bar. The other wire, would attach to the wire removed from the buss bar. If meter movement is opposite of the direction of current requested, swap the two wires on the back of the gauge.
