3rd Gen Tach Help!

So I recently bought a 1989 RS mocked up to look like an IROC, V6 replaced with a 305 from a 1984 and swapped over to an Edelbrock carburetor setup. It has a 145mph instrument cluster with tach/oil/coolant temp and voltmeter on it. It has a Delco coil-in-cap distributor. Everything is wired to the distributor correctly (at least under the hood), but the tachometer will not budge. It'll sit maxed out whether the car is on or off. Anybody encountered this before? I'm pretty sure that the tach isn't compatible with a regular old distributor setup but I'm pretty clueless when it comes to third gens.

Re: 3rd Gen Tach Help!

It reads like the return spring is broke or needle stuck at max or no input from a now defunct ECM. Plus, if it did work, it would show higher rpm's than V8 normal because its a V6 tach.

You might look for the input wire from the ECM and hook it to the TACH terminal on the HEI unit, just to see if it would work.

I think your best bet is to get an aftermarket tach and wire it up or substitute the existing tach in the dash.

Re: 3rd Gen Tach Help!

Ah, yeah that makes sense if the tach receives it's signal from the PCM rather than straight from the distributor. Might explain why the rest of my gauges don't work..
