1969 Camaro dash tach

I am going to install a factory tach in my wife's 69 350 camaro. The car did not come with a factory tach. The one I have has three wires coming from the tach. Light Blue, Yellow, and Orange. Also Could an x11 camaro have the 350 ss package. My wife's car has the same block as an ss only with a two barrell car. What special features did small block SS camaros have?

Re: 1969 Camaro dash tach

Gab, the SS350 added higher compression heads, 4 bbl and 4 bolt mains to the standard 350. You could get the style trim (X11) with any car. The tach was part of a gauge package, with a center clock and console gauges if you ordered a console, center fuel gauge if you did not and they could be ordered on any car too. Sorry, I dont know the wire colors.

Re: 1969 Camaro dash tach

The RPO Z21 Style Trim could be ordered on any car, as Kevin noted. X11 was the "catch all" X-code for cars ordered with Style Trim that were not SS396 (X22) or Z28 (X33) cars. So, all L6, base or optional V8, and SS350 cars ordered with Style Trim were coded as X11.

As far as the tach wiring goes, you may need to clear up what you're asking. Do you have some kind of aftermarket tach now, with the wiring colors you posted? A factory tach has/needs a 12V feed wire, a signal wire from the coil terminal, and a ground. I don't have the wiring diagrams handy this second, so I don't have the OE colors, but...

69 models equipped with a tach had a separate wiring harness for the tach, which went through the firewall adjacent to the fuse box/bulkhead connectors. Like this:

Re: 1969 Camaro dash tach

I didn't realize the factory tach was so easy to wire up with the use of Rick's wiring harness. Thanks. It is a factory tach from a 350 SS car. It has a portion of what I believe is the factory harness. This is where I got the colors from. and yes the heads have the small valves in them. The block is noted to be a 4 bolt main according to the stampings. My wife is a stickler to original equipment so she wants 69 camaro stuff, like clock and tach and what not. Thanks fellas.

Do you have the head casting numbers and dates?

Re: 1969 Camaro dash tach

Was the tach and gauge option listed on the cowl tag? My 68 has nothing on the cowl tag, but luckily I have the Protect-O-Plate.

Re: 1969 Camaro dash tach

Kevin, I have the casting number and dates listed somewhere in my files. I can't remember where. I know the production date of the car was 4/14/69. I'm almost positive the block is a 2388 (HD-350,250hp) and heads are 185 (c119) and not 186. I looked it up years ago and never revisited it. The car has 121,000 miles. The first two owners said nothing was ever done to the engine. also to the other member, the cowl tag states nothing for interior opitions that I am aware of????

Re: 1969 Camaro dash tach

Right, you have a L65 with a 2bbl carb, standard 350 offering.
