1196 Camaro Ignition Key Issue

Well I have a new issue with my camaro. It had been sitting a couple of months with no battery. Long story, but it was in hiding. You put in the ignition key and turn it and nothing except the security light coming on. I did some reading on the internet and called the dealer and the conclusion is one of 2 things. Either the key has gone bad or the tumblers have. I read on the net where there have been issues with the ignitions going bad on these quite often. Unfortunately this is a second hand car and I only have one ignition key so I cannot try the spare.

I also read where leaving the key in for 10 minutes and trying again will work. But nothing.

The delaership wants $140 for a new ignition and keys. Then labor takes it up over $400. Wow... I know on older cars you could turn the ignition switch to a certain position and pull it out and replace it.

My questions are-
Has anyone ran in to this before and have a trick to getting it started?
And can someone point me in the direction of how to remove the ignition and replace it myself? Surely it can't be that big of a job, can it?

Thanks for any feedback.

It's probably a 1996 with the troublesome PASS key system.

You can either pay up to fix it right or bypass it.

Here is one of many ways to do that.

Try a different dealer. I locked the radio in my truck, the search on the net showed charges from free to hundreds of dollar to fix. It took me ten minutes and a phone call.

With the original key available should make this alot simpler for the dealer ( or locksmith) the actual parts I think you can change. If you get a new cylinder with key Team Camaro can tell you how to change it.
