Caprice Alternator

Just wondering if I can put a 94 Caprice 140amp alt on my 87 silverado? I just took off my stock 65amp alt and made a bracket and installed a 93 100amp alt from a full size chevy truck. I think it is a CS3 from what I've read on here.

I can make a bracket, mainly wondering about the wiring.

Thumbs up Re: Caprice Alternator

If it's GM series alternator it really should be just fine.
There may be small differences in the original wiring hook-up between the two vehicles, but not something you can't easily address. Wiring sockets for all GM alternator connections are available from most auto parts stores and at the dealers.
The original bracketry should be usable you may need to 're-clock' the housing on the alternator to get the bolt holes to line up correctly, but that should be it.

Look through site on the net, like Mad Electrical http://www.madelectrical.com/ , for information on the wiring and other stuff you'll need.

Re: Caprice Alternator

I just put this 140amp alt on. It was very easy! I already had the new style plug and it bolted right in place of my old one.

My guage is reading at least 1 volt higher at idle than it ever has. This should help with my slow power windows.

Re: Caprice Alternator

I should help with slow windows, unfortunately some of GM's power windows had another flaw. They put a thermal breaker inside the motor that develops a bad connection. What's more, GM only sells the entire regulator unit - you can't buy just the motor. The good news is that you can remove the regulator, pull the brush cap off and solder the thermal breaker contacts together.
