Turn Key, starter won't engage

No click no nothing. I replaced the poitive cable from battery to starter, then replaced the starter & solenoid. What's the next logical step (not that I made logical steps to begin with) - thanks.

Re: Turn Key, starter won't engage

Is the battery fully charged?
edit: Are the connections at the solenoid correct.

Is the car in park or neutral...neutral safety switch. Move the shifter back and forth with the key in the start position and see if the starter turns. Be careful if it is out of gear and tries to start. Have your foot on the brake pedal.

Gary,
I guess Mike and I are fishing for more information. Year, trans, engine, etc. It would be a big help.

if you've replaced the battery/starter/etc already, I swould say Neutral safety switch?

Is it a column shift (or former column shift that wa smoved to the floor? (if so, make sure the columne shift is rotated all the way to whwere the "park" position should be.

Otherwise, pull the neutral safety switch connector off o the switch and install a "jumper" to see if that solves your problem...

Re: Turn Key, starter won't engage

Make a long #10 wire with alligator clips on each end and engage the solenoid from the battery with the car in park or neutral. This eliminates the ignition switch NSS, and related wiring, or indicates that's where the problem is.

Use half a set of jumper cables to temporarily replace the big ground cable. Don't remove or loosen the ground cable. Try to start the car.

Do the same with the big positive cable.

Almost free, simple and fast... Test first, replace parts later.

Re: Turn Key, starter won't engage

Thanks for all the replies - it was a bad neutral safety switch.
The previous owner really buthered my underhood wiring and I'm considering replacing the harnesses (both the engine harness and front light harness) - on a scale of 1-10, just how difficult is this to do? I'd like to do the dash harness also, but I'd like to tackle the underhood wiring first. The dash looks way more intimidating.
