Help with some wires - new gauges

Hey guys, so I bought a Covan dash kit from a forum member (already wired). There are a red(12v), black(ground), a green(off fuel gauge), yellow and purple wire which I don't know where exactly they hook up to. Maybe if Mike could tune in?

BTW, its a 69 Camaro RS/SS. Speedometer and fuel gauge ONLY. No tach, no clock, no console.

Re: Help with some wires - new gauges

what gauges are in that dash?

One wire will be for illumination, it will go to every gauge.

Re: Help with some wires - new gauges

Yellow and purple are the VSS(vehicle speed sensor wires).

Re: Help with some wires - new gauges

If they are off of the speedo....VSS definately...especially if twisted
My fuel sending wire off of my Phantom II gas gauge was purple.

Re: Help with some wires - new gauges

Autometer gauges. Red(power) and black (ground) go to every gauge. I just can't figure out the purple, yellow and green. Where do the VSS wires go to? Only thing I unplugged from my factory speedo was the speedometer wire(thick one)? and a light which was for illumination.

Re: Help with some wires - new gauges

Does it looks like this one? If so, you got to have more than the number of wires you mention. Ground wire, +12 comming from the light switch for illumination, gas sender, water temp sender, +12 for volt meter, tach signal from ign, oil press sender(unless mechanical gages are used). Imagine the thick one from the speedo was the speedo cable.

Re: Help with some wires - new gauges

Well my autometer oil and water gauges were already wired in before I bought the car, and the gauges match my new ones so I am just putting them into the Covan dash. All I have to wire in is the speedo, tach, fuel, and volt gauges. All I have from the new 4 gauges is a black, red, green, purple and yellow wire coming out. No harness, no clips, just wires.

Re: Help with some wires - new gauges

The volt gauge is easy, it just need a switched 12 volt source, like an "acc" output from the fuse block. There's a male spade marked "acc" in the fuse block. For the fuel gauge, you can trace the lines back from the fuel gauge, in the film circuit behind your original gauge cluster, to the wire harness connector, where you can identify the wire/color and connect it to the appropriate terminal on your new fuel gauge. Don't know if there is a tach signal on your car's wiring harness, and you might need to bring a wire directly from the coil, or from the "tach" marked terminal on an HEI ign, all the way to the tachometer. Speedo, "if mechanical", is a matter of screwing the cable back in the new speedo/gauge.

Re: Help with some wires - new gauges

Alright, I just played around with the wires today and figured them out. Everything worked, just gotta wait for the new 194 wedge led white lights to come in and I will wire and bolt it in. I'll take some pics for you guys when its done. Thanks!
