67 Low Fuel Warning Light

G'day all, I am having trouble fault finding the problem with the low fuel warning light on my 67. Obviously it has the original guage pack which gives it a fuel warning light in the bottom of the speedo that lights up when you are getting pretty close to empty. Well mine is doing funny things at the moment and this is what they are.Firstly my fuel guage was reading incorrectly so I have just bought a new sender unit and have installed it & the guage is reading perfectly. Obviously I have taken the fuel tank out so I tested the new sender unit whilst it was out of the tank. So when I had the float arm on the new sender unit in the empty position the guage was ready all the way to empty but I don't get the fuel light in the speedo to lighting up but if I disconnect the ground wire that supports all the guages and the instrument lights on the centre console and then turn my parking lights on the fuel light on the speedo comes on and the instrument lights all glow at 1/4 brightness. If I re-connect the ground wire, my instrument lights come to full brightness & the fuel warning light goes out. What does this mean, is my low fuel light indicator unit broke, or is this a grounding problem?Your help would be appreciated.ThanksSteve

Re: 67 Low Fuel Warning Light

Has your light every worked correctly?
Qwik test is to grd the wire in the trunk going to the fuel tank. The light should come on imediatly.

Re: 67 Low Fuel Warning Light

67-68-69 all had them as options. My guess is grounds somewhere. the AIM has the wiring diagrams to check that too.

Re: 67 Low Fuel Warning Light

1967 camaro's had them and it was not a option it was part of the CONSOLE/GAUGE/FACTORY TACH option ,
what is probably wrong with your's is the same thing that is wrong everyone else's , the low fuel module is bad , mine worked up until about 5 or 6 year's ago it was neat when you got under a 1/4 tank and went around a curve the light would flicker a little then as you got closer to empty the light would come on and go off and when you were almost out of gas the light would just stay on , it's a shame that this is one of the thing's that the part's companie's have us by the B#l's over , the module would not be hard to replace BUT IT IS $60 FRIGGIN BUCK'S PLUS SHIPPING

I loved the light in my 67 when it worked and would like for it to work but I AIN'T GONNA PAY THAT

to make sure of one thing you can check you bulb by putting 12 volt on the yellow wire leaving the low fuel module and your light will come on if it work's like that then the module is bad , I suppose you could get lucky and have a bad bulb but I doubt it ,,,,

here is a pic of the module in the back of the gauge's,,
