68 camaro no horn relay?

OK, So if I read the posts right the horn relay in a 68 camaro serves two purposes.. one it feeds power to the main power circuit(ie all the power for the cars electrical system runs through this) and two it blows the horns.. only problem is.. I have no horn relay? I cant find one anywhere sooo..

1. How is my cars electrical system getting power and two how to I put horns in and make it work?

Re: 68 camaro no horn relay?

Has the car had any previous electical work done to it? Some AAW update kit's move the horn relay to under the dash, might it have been rewired.Does it have glass fuses in the fuse box or modern blade type?

Steve

68 work in progress , but I can drive it now - O5D build - 712 trim - 02 color
Think it was a 396 , 4 spd. - now in primer , 350 , 4 spd. , lots of new body and mech. parts

Re: 68 camaro no horn relay?

relocated battery to the back of the trunk with some 20 and 30 amp fuses off the battery.. has a fuel cell, fuel pump(ext) and an electric fan with a big relay in the trunk. There is no relay on the rad support ANYWHERE and the fuse panel is the old type with glass tubes... Also had an MSD6AL BOX

Somebody probably removed the relay for whatever reason and joined together the wires that went to the relay bus bar. If you dig into your harness driver's side front you'll probably find where they spliced them together.

You could redo the harness back to stock(ish) and install a new factory style horn relay. If it were mine and I didn't care about originality I'd install a Bosch type relay and call it good.

Re: 68 camaro no horn relay?

It reads like the car was made for a specific purpose. I would follow the battery cable(s) and see if somewhere on the car, there would be a junction block for power distribution.

You might look at starter solenoid post to see if there would be a power lead from there to power the car.

OE design has a red wire from the firewall connector and splits into two wires, one to ign switch and the ther to the headlamp switch. Then the fuse box gets power also.

If battery is in the trunk, most racing governing bodies require a cutoff switch for battery to kill power to the car in case of accident.
