69 AUTO WITHOUT GAUGES ....ADDING FACTORY GAUGES...ampmeter?

Ok guys was wanting your opinion on something addign factory style guages so as far as the fuel, temp, and oil im pretty sure got those covered on wiring and stuff but on the ampmeter im kinda sketchy from what i've read on here its a 50/50 shot on buring your car down ...lol so do they make a volts meter that you can wire up that looks just like the amp meter possibly? Correct me if im wrong but on the amp meter you have to run either 8-10 guage and it runs to the small pos post block near the battery and then to the ? Now from the other side of the gauge, I kinda dont like the idea of these hot wires going thru like that but is there a ntoher option? Is there another guage to put in the factory styles place or rewire it or something ? thanks guys ...Kurt

Assuming you have or going to add a console, you can buy a "conversion" harness that connects to your non-gauge harness and adds some wiring to make a non gauge car into a gauge car. Look at some of the main vendors and they have them. Another option is if you do a search on here, one of the vendors was recently selling a "voltmeter" conversion for the factory gauge pod. Quite a few people on here have also added the autometer gauge pod in to their console.

Do you have a console or column shifter? If you have a console I would suggest going with the aftermarket console pod (autometer) and guages. I also did not have any guages with my 69 auto console shifter. That way you can go with a voltmeter rather than an ampmeter. Easy to do. And wire by doing a daisy chain. There are posts on how to do that. I don't think there is an aftermarket guage to put in place of the ampmeter. I could be wrong.

Re: 69 AUTO WITHOUT GAUGES ....ADDING FACTORY GAUGES...ampmeter?

Hey guys thanks for the info but see i did put the autometer gauges in my 68 even made my own harness and all and wired them up but this is on my grandfathers 69 its a auto and already has a console in it as well & he's done bought the factory console gauges and wants me to wire it up like i did mine except in this case now im dealing with a amp meter instead of the volts meter like i had in the autometer setup. So i see you said theirs someone on here that makes a conversion klit for it so ....somebody anybody (lol) where can i get this conversion setup ....

Fireball, the above is the first conversion to a voltmeter I have seen for 69 stock gauges. It is $120 and won't be out until August (they say) but it looks like it will be worth the wait. That being said the ammeter in the camaro is not the "full flow" type where all the power for the vehicle goes through it but you still need to know what you are doing to hook them up safely. IMO they should be safe in a stock system but if upgraded alternators or extra electrical gadgets are added to the car it would be wise to consider replacing it with the voltmeter.

I learned something new today. I didn't know they made a voltmeter replacement for the ampmeter. But it does look like you will need to paint the dial face to match the other guages.
