CS 130 alt.

Well... finally got the girl running tonight. Well the volt reading was only 11.78 at idle with elect. fan and pump running
But... on a good note, never went over 120* in the garage at idle for 30-45 minutes (and garage heater was on until I opened the doors)

I have no idea what the fan or pump pulls but the battery did show charging with a 37 amp alt. and the fuel pump running before the CS 130.

What might be the issue ???

Re: CS 130 alt.

Maybe it needs to be revved up to start its function.
I'm sure you have the alt hooked up the way you've shown in other posts.

If alt is working, the case would be warm to the touch, hot if battery was in a state of low charge.
One thing about the CS130's is they will supply power until something burns up due to current load/demand.

Maybe others here will expunge their knowledge.........

Re: CS 130 alt.

You can usually get a good indication that an Alternator is working by placing the end of a Screw Driver behind it just over the Shaft. When it's working the magnetic Field will attract the Screw Driver Blade. Of course you should take a Voltage Reading across the + and - terminals of your battery when it's low to confirm that it is putting out approx 14.2 Volts.

Re: CS 130 alt.

Yes... didn't think to do that while it was running. I only took a reading at the battery with 2 different meters.
Next time I start her up I'll try to get a amp reading on the fan or maybe disconnect it and see where the volts go ?

Re: CS 130 alt.

You might check your connections and make sure you have good grounds. You should check into the updated wiring system on MadElectrical.com, its a great upgrade and supplies better power to accessories, lights, dash, etc. and allows for future upgrades like relays for your lights.

Re: CS 130 alt.

This is just in broad general terms but on some standard build alternators the higher the peak output, the lower the idle output available. American Autowire makes a CS130 that can put out up to 60A at idle.

You can install a small diameter alternator pulley to speed it up at idle and that will help if everything else is OK. With a self exciting alternator, there is an RPM sensing function that will not turn the voltage regulator on until a certain speed is sensed. It is possible with your idle speed and pulley diameter you may be right on the edge.

Put your meter on it and bump the engine speed up a little and see what she does.
