Is it OK to eliminate power window relay in a 76 Camaro

Hello friends and thank you in advance for any help. I took apart my power window relay assembly, cleaned the contacts and unless I hold down the relay contact the power windows just won't function. Does anyone know if it is OK to eliminate this relay or any other fixes other than trying to find a replacement relay. I don't understand why it's there in the first place. Any help would be great. I have a 76 Camaro LT by the way.

Not familiar with that set-up, but a relay is used to protect the switch. If you wire around the relay, the full load of the window motor will travel through the switch, and more than likely ruin it.

It takes hardly any juice at all to operate a relay. The switch operates the relay, and the relay handles the heavy draws.

You might be able to wire in a Bosch type automotive relay. (again, not familiar with what you're working on). They can be had for just a few bucks.

You will also blow fuses every time you hit the switch.
