67 fuel gauge reads past full

I have a 67 that the fuel gauge was kind of working it would bounce around while driving. The other day my wife went and filled up the tank and now it reads past full even after driving for 60 miles.

Re: 67 fuel gauge reads past full

Sending unit could be stuck in the full position. Normally, gauge will read about 3-4 marks passed FULL.

But after driving 60 miles, assuming 15 MPG, gauge should read around 1/2-5/8 full/empty. Might slap the dash........

Re: 67 fuel gauge reads past full

Hey Everett!!!

What would cause it to read past the full mark like mine does and at empty it reads 3/4... Ive tried a new gauge (auto meter) and same results. Ive tested the grounds and ohm's which indicate the sender went bad. But over night.

It can happen; 0 ohms empty, 90 ohms full. Might check ground connection.

Get two 45-50 ohm resistors from Radio Shack or TV repair shop.
Both resistors in series, 90-100 ohms full tank.
One resistor in series is half tank.
Both resistors in parallel is 1/4 tank.
This means one resistor lead to the tan wire to gauge, the other resistor lead to ground.
