Question Need Brake Light Help

I have a 69 Camaro just about ready for the road after being apart for years. I have a problem with the brake lights and hazard flashers. I put in new flasher units and checked all the wires and grounds but to get the hazard light to blink on the rear I have to wiggle the turn signal lever and then they will all blink but cannot get the brake lights to come on when pushing the brake pedal. I have tested the wiring on my brake light switch and it works but what am I missing. I read some of the old posts and figure it may be in the turn signal but what do I check and where should I start? Thanks for any help...

Re: Need Brake Light Help

I would start at the steering column, there is a harness on the underside of the column and if the pins arnt all the way in can cause all kinds of problems. Then work your way back to the rear and check for good grounds.

Re: Need Brake Light Help

I'll check that and disconnect the wires and reconnect them tomorrow to see if that makes any difference. It just seemed funny to have to wiggle the turn signal to get them to blink on the rear. Thanks...

Butch don't forget that harness goes right up that steering column, so i think its in between the steering wheel and harness. May be just bad contacts in the wheel.

Re: Need Brake Light Help

You have brake light switch with power through it to column, white wire,
Up the column to the t/sig switch and back out.
Dark green for right rear light
Yellow for left rear light.

You can do one of two methods:
1. jumper from white to either wire and check light for brightness after pressign on brake pedal, or
2. take a jumper from BAT spade on fuse panel and apply to either wire and check to see if light is on.

If above testing shows lights by jumpering, but checking column harness through the original path does not work, then I'd say the t/sig switch is toast - only after pulling up just a hair on the t'sig handle - might be just enough wear the contacts are not making.

Re: Need Brake Light Help

Thanks guys I got busy today and haven't had time to check on it. I'll make time tomorrow I want to start driving it before long. From what I've done already I'd say its in the turn signal part...

Wink Re: Need Brake Light Help

I checked the wiring and the lights are working with the jumper wire so I took off the steering wheel and cleaned everything but no help so I ordered a new turn signal assembly from camaro central. It should be here in a couple of days hopefully that will fix all the problems. Thanks for the input it really helped...Butch
