69 Firebird Gas Gauge?

Just got a 69 firebird and the gas gauge in the dash does not work. I plan on swapping the gauges out for Auto-Meter and a Covan Dash. But I need to figure out if the Gas Tank level sending unit works.
Any one have any trouble shooting steps to verify and determine which gauge I will need?
Thanks
Ray

Firebird/Camaro - unhook the tan wire going to the sender from any point inside and measure resistance to ground - full is 90 ohms, 45 ohms might indicate half tank.
