Re: What is this?

Hard to say, but it looks to have been added. Could be a anti-theft device as in a switch to cut power to the dash harness or part of an alarm system. Look on the opposite side of the firewall up under the dash.

Re: What is this?

Yes was added, maybe a positive jumper terminal? I guess take a voltage for each post.... As Al stated, Security Alarm, Power Winows, Power Top or a fancy radio?

Re: What is this?

Same thing I use in my trucks to activate my snow plow pumps. Can you follow them back? Basically it just sends power to another source. One large wire should come right off bat?

I was thinking the same thing but then I thought about when I had a travel trailer I pulled around and my truck had something like that for isolating the trailer battery when the ignition was off to prevent running the trailer off the truck battery...

Re: What is this?

Yes, it's a Ford starter solenoid.

It was a common mod to wire one into the starter circuit to correct the hot cranking problems that many GM vehicles had.

Like any relay, it can be used for just about anything as the others have already said. You'll have to follow the wires to find out for sure why it's there on your car.
