Radio in Accessory position?

69 Camaro. Should the factory radio work when the ignition key is in the accessory position? Mine only works in the run position. Assuming the answer is yes, is the likely culprit the ignition switch on top of the column? Thanks!

Re: Radio in Accessory position?

For '68, the radio is on the same power circuit, Brown wire from Ignition switch, as the heater and wipers. It is also connected to the voltage regulator.

Re: Radio in Accessory position?

Mine works like that too Al... I never sit with the radio on by itself so I never bothered to look into it. If the car starts and drives, I'm happy.

Re: Radio in Accessory position?

Yep mine WAS like that...and it annoys me I need the key to turn it on.
Therefore I hooked the radio into the orange cigar lighter circuit....This is live all the time.
Do not forget to turn the radio off over night or else you will have a flat battery.

Re: Radio in Accessory position?

Thanks for the replies. It just seems crazy that the radio wouldn't work in acc. In fact, what does work in accessory? Nothing I can think of.

Re: Radio in Accessory position?

Same here... nothing.
I may have another issue right now too, so I'm going to throw another ignition switch on the column and see what happens.

Re: Radio in Accessory position?

same here guys, radio wont work in ACC position so I leave it alone, not gonna tear about the steering column for that. I only use the radio/cd player when Im cruising anyway

Re: Radio in Accessory position?

I thought the radio did normally work on ACC.
If it doesn't, what does?

Mine does..

The 12 BRN from the ignition switch powers the Heater-A/C, Wipers, Radio and the ACC Aux terminal on the fuse box.

Look at your wiring diagrams..

Nov 68 Van Nuys. 327 floor-shift-auto, Frost Green and not much else when new.

Re: Radio in Accessory position?

OK - figured it out. Thanks to Steve. The radio (heater, wipers also) do work in ACC. On my car anyway, it was simply a matter of adjusting the column mounted switch. The mounting holes in the switch body are slotted to allow for some adjustment. In my case, I just loosened the two small bolts and slid the switch forward, retightened. It's been out of adjustment ever since I bought the car 25 yrs ago. All is well now. Thanks again.

Re: Radio in Accessory position?

I knew that's how to adjust it. Just didn't care enough to crawl under there.
