Auto meter electric oil pressure gauge

Small block 388 running a electric oil pres gauge. Started car and gauge was at 60. noticed during slow cruising was only 20 psi. Brought rpm up to 2500-3000 and no change. Could it be the sensor?? I hope. Got home shut down and cooled, restarted and 20psi.

Re: Auto meter electric oil pressure gauge

Could be the gauge or sensor... Did you get on it, any engine noise?..ground out the gauge see if does a full sweep...try loosening the sensor and retighten..if that fails to show any improvement... You would need to get a mechanical gauge to confirm...oil pressure...

I would doubt it's an engine issue because if it were I would venture to say you should still see a change in pressure either from increased rpms or cold start..

Thanks hector. No engine noise. Going to plum in a mechanical gauge and confirm. Boy I hope thats all it is. Only 35 miles on it.

Re: Auto meter electric oil pressure gauge

Check with a mechanical gauge... If it still reads low I would guess either a broken or stuck open pressure relief spring in the pump...

Re: Auto meter electric oil pressure gauge

Did you put thread sealer on the sender unit when installing it ? Possibility some of the sealer made it's way into the sender. I had this happen once when installing a sender with motor in the car.

Re: Auto meter electric oil pressure gauge

I did use tape. I wondered myself if it got clogged up.

Re: Auto meter electric oil pressure gauge

I always thought those switches work on ground resistance.. Wouldn't the tape interfere with the grounding..

Hmmmm. Good question. I'll have to scope it out.

Re: Auto meter electric oil pressure gauge

From what I understand the electronic pressure gauges work off ground resistance...when I help my buddy install an electric sensor in his firebird it specifically stated not to use anything on the thread.. As it could effect the gauges..

My Autometer fuel gauge frequently sticks on E - a flick with a fingernail always wakes it up. Sticky needle I guess.

Re: Auto meter electric oil pressure gauge

I thought they were pipe thread and tapered.. The further they twist in the tighter the seal..when I did my buddies just threaded it in by hand then threw a wrench on it and tightened it up good.. No leaks..

Re: Auto meter electric oil pressure gauge

I use liquid teflon on my sending units. It is a white paste.

I dont use teflon tape. With liquid teflon you still get a good ground on the sending unit.

Re: Auto meter electric oil pressure gauge

Agree with Mike, I use PTFE (teflon) paste on all my senders and never had a ground problem as the paste does conduct electricity.
