Power antenna won't retract

Just installed a new AM- FM Radio in my 69 and hooked up the rear mount power antenna. Didn't have any wiring instructions for the antenna since I bought the car in pieces and the antenna came in the box of parts. It has a red wire for the power feed , a ground wire ,and an orange wire. I assumed that the orange wire connects to the blue wire marked antenna on the new radio. The antenna went up when the power was turned on , but it won't retract when the power is turned off. Could this be hooked up wrong or is the antenna just defective?

Re: Power antenna won't retract

Your red wire has to be hot all the time (even with the car off) if it isn't already.

Thanks Steiner. That was the problem, I had it wired to the ignition wire that switches off.

Re: Power antenna won't retract

Do a lot of folks with rear antenna go w/ retractable antenna?

I've got a rear mounted one too and I can't stand it. Really makes the car look too Dukes of Hazard when it's parked at a show.

I like the rear retractable antenna but with a rear spoiler , it won't clear the antenna if it is up so i'm going to install stops on the hinges so it only goes up so far. It doesn't restrict the trunk opening much. I'm thinking about installing hood adjusting bolts with rubber bumpers at the metal above the hinge arm. Won't hardly be noticable. I will let everyone know how it works out.

Yeah, let us know. Drives me crazy having to push the antenna out of the way every time I get into the trunk!

Re: Power antenna won't retract

An easy solution is what I do....keep the trunk key and ignition key on the same keyring.

Right, but if you have the Dukes of Hazard style rear antenna that doesn't retract, you're still stuck pushing that thing outta the way... Plus -- and I'm SO ashamed to admit this -- PO put a Found On Road Dead antenna on it! Gotta get rid of it.

Shepherd to Lost Sheep.....Shepherd to Lost Sheep....You got your ears on?

In that case, I'd say the easiest thing to do would be to make a couple of straps out of 12AWG cable and eyelets to limit the trunk travel. Screw one end to the curved hinge and the other to the package tray or other metal under the sail panel. Or with the way the hinge runs through the brackets, you may be able to just put a screw in the side of the hinge so when it gets to a certain point it hits the bracket and stops the trunk lid.

"This is RosCOE P COLtrane! You Duke boys better git outta that Nopar junk and git yerselves into a 'Maro!"

Those are excellent ideas! NEver even crossed my mind to limit the travel of the trunk.

Re: Power antenna won't retract

OK guys, I just completed the hinge stops and it worked out great. Go to the Restoration Corner. I posted on there how to do it. It is very easy and only took about an hour and cost less than seven dollars.

Re: Power antenna won't retract

Just extend the lower antenna mount in trunk making the antenna stick up almost straight up..
The trunk will open all way and still not interfere the the spoiler.
