Alternator Question

I have a 1969 Camaro 502/ 502 with a B Cool Radiator with twin elect fan set up. The fans are 2700 cfm. When the fans come on the amp gauge will drop from 14 down to 12 and the engine idol rpms will drop about 300 rpm's. I am not sure what size the Alternator is, but because it pulls the engine RPMs down I think it is working too hard. Should I change it to a 140 amp. Or is the drop in amp and idol rpm normal ?

Re: Alternator Question

The amp drop probably means you have a wiring issue. Are you running the fans off a relay? You should have a relay that has power coming directly from your horn relay bus or similar. What does your alternator look like and what other aftermarket accessories? Are you still running the stock alt or has it been changed? A picture might help folks figure out what you have.

Re: Alternator Question

Look at the alt case next to the belt pinch bolt to find the stamped amps at full field.
If you have an alt with the two-wire connector plugging in the back of the case, {ll}, you have an external regulated 10DN alt.
If the two-wire connector plugs in on the side, [- -], then you have an internal reg'd alt.
