Where to start? New harness

I just replaced the whole drive train..new motor, new tko600 trans, tilt column, rear end ect... including the wiring. AAW under dash and engine compartment harness.

I went to connect the battery cables and got a big spark when I tried to put on the positive cable. (neg went on first). Melted the connection a bit. (I think I heard the mini started engage a bit also.)

where do i start to look for a problem. I must have hooked something up wrong. This is the stock wire harness for a 69.
any info would be appreciated

Call AAW, they're pretty good at offering assistance.

Re: Where to start? New harness

I would start by finding out what circut is causing you the problem. Replace fuses and get back to square one. Hook up the positve cable to positve battery terminal. With the negitive cable unhooked get a test light and clip to the negitve cable then touch the tip of the light to the negitve battery terminal. If the light comes on the you have a problem. I would start pulling individual fuses untill the light goes off. That will narrow down your search. Make sure your doors are shut while trying this test.

Re: Where to start? New harness

Instead of hooking it to the battery, hook the cables to a 10 amp battery charger. If you have a short it will drain the charger down and not burn any wires up. Also if you think you heard the starter then disconnect the wires on the neutral safety switch and start troubleshooting where the problem is.

Re: Where to start? New harness

just seems strange to have a short with all new wiring.. the neutral switch would do that ??

No the neutral switch will not do this. The start circuit goes from the (key) ignition switch to neutral safety then to starter. The ignition swith is on top of the column and had slotted holes to adjust it. But if the ignition switch is adjusted wrong and the car is in park or neutral the starter might try to engage.

Re: Where to start? New harness

OK, so I'm an ***! After checking numerous suspect connections and reading alot of posts ...I checked the wire to the starter. It was on the wrong post!

Its the obvious that can be the hardest to find. what a "Rook" move.

thanks all.

fyi..I did get power, the motor cranked but I have some weird stuff going on ..like the relay switch is making a buzzing sound.. and lights on the dash are lit
