Info on alternator/voltage regulator

I just finished installing my new 358 into my 1969 Camaro. I had a friend who is very knowlegable in these cars more than me. When he was tuning the motor, he checked my voltage and was reading I think 12. I was told it needed to be a bit higher. I did notice last year a few times I had it out at night, the battery seems as it was a bit on the weak side. He said to have the voltage regulator and alternator checked. I will be taking it to my local alternator/starter to see if they can figure it out. The voltage regulator looks to be he orginal, as it had delco on it in faded letters. Anyone have any thoughts on this. Thanks, Jerod

Many of the big auto parts stores will test them for you if you bring you car in. If it turns out one or both are bad you might want to consider upgrading to a newer system if you are not going for a stock restoration.

Replace the old VR with a Wels VR715, its an electronic VR and will even out your operation there. The old original cover even goes over it, nobody else will know.

Re: Info on alternator/voltage regulator

I love when you can find an acceptable modernization / upgrade part that works better then the original, requires no additional re-working of wires or harness, installs in the same location as original with same hardware and allows you to camouflage its look with the original part cover. Best of all worlds. And ten bucks and change to boot at any Auto-zone store.
