Back up light?

I need to hook up my back up light before i get my inspection sticker (and wiper motor but one thing at a time). I have a 4 speed muncie with a Hurst shifter and know i can use the Hurst kit to accomplish my problem. But....does anyone know why a bracket in the steering column (in the engine bay) will trigger my back up lights? It looks like some sort of linkage would fit into that bracket but nothing is there....do automatic and standard steering columns look different?

Re: Back up light?

Yes there is a rod that runs from the reverse shift lever forward to the reverse lock out "bell-crank" assembly where another rod went vertical to the steering column where it rotated to activate the reverse switch, and lock the steering wheel as part of the new anti-theft ignition lock. Automatics did not use this system. Anyone converting from Auto to manual has to either install this system or use a switch on the shifter to trigger the lights.

Your column is most likely set in the "active/locked" position so you can remove the key, and the backup-lights are disconnected at the switch under the dash on the column or the bulbs have removed in the tail.

But all the major vendors sell replacement assemblies and rods, Heart Beat City may even have NOS if you are looking for original.

Re: Back up light?

Originally there was a rod from the shifter linkage up to the column that activates the reverse light switch, if headers are installed then the rod has to be removed.

Re: Back up light?

Thanks I have headers (car not even close to stock) so i guess i need to get the Hurst kit? The reverse lights come on and off with the movement of that bracket....they stay on until i pull up on that bracket....then the vibration of the car running will activate them again. If the linkage is removed what do people do to keep the bracket from moving?
