Turns over but no spark

My car needed to have a new cap and rotor installed. It looked bad under the cap so I decided to change the coil and ignition module. Everything went well, started the car went for a spin around the block about a mile came home. Parked it for 30 minutes got in fired it up and stalled in the driveway. It will not start just turns over. It acts like the gas is water.

It has a full tank of new gas from a high traffic gas station.

Re: Turns over but no spark

I would double check the coil wire and the points. Sounds like something is loose. Then again it wouldn't be the first defective coil I have heard of.

Re: Turns over but no spark

Could have a bad ignition module also. Is it a module or points in the dist? You mentioned you replaced the module. Try putting the old one back in.

Re: Turns over but no spark

All the electronics are modernized (the points are gone) it has a new ACCEL HEI coil. I am going to drain the tank unless anything else would make my car not fire up.

Re: Turns over but no spark

Gasoline just doesn't go bad in 30 minutes so that IMHO would be a total waste of your time.

Its an ignition issue. No spark no fire so confirm by seeing if you have spark at a plug. If you do check the timing again it may have slipped.

Re: Turns over but no spark

I have the old module which was still good, I will switch it out. Just thought I may as well change to some newer parts these were from 1979.

The car had died going to a show last week so it got towed home. I opened it up today and the distributor cap and rotor were toasted blacker than black.. I replaced everything I could without changing the distributor bodyand mechanical stuff's position. Everything ran great for a little bit. Now here I am.

Re: Turns over but no spark

As suggested, check for spark, either by holding a plug wire a 1/4 inch from a good ground with screwdriver plugged into it to hold it from ground and having an assistant crank the engine over, or use a timing light just to see if it triggers the light.

If no spark, you might want to check power connection from the power source to the dist, something may have come loose.

I'm sure you have gone over the route you took in changing out the coil and module to make nothing is amiss.

Re: Turns over but no spark

Did the new module come with a little tube of white heat transfer grease? It needs be be used between the module and distributor body when installing.

If your new rotor button was toasted you may have also needed the low resistance button with the module and coil you installed. They will not heat up as much as a stock resistance one with higher voltages.

Also check the BATT connector at the HEI and make sure it is not connected to a cloth covered resistor wire coming from the bulkhead connector. It should be run from either the IGN spade on the fuse block or from the battery via a relay with the old resistor wire triggering the relay.

Re: Turns over but no spark

As Everett suggests the timing light option is the easy way to see if you have spark. Some folks are a bit put off from having to hold up a live spark plug to the frame someplace looking for a spark to jump.
