'67 Camaro - Starting issues

Hey guys - I am the proud new owner of '67 Camaro. I recently had the starter and distributor replaced... it also has a newer battery. When starting the beast, it now has a hesitation, which gets worse as the day goes on (longer hesitation) and then she decides enough is enough and does not want to start. It is very similiar in sound and feel to starting a car with a dieing battery.

Any help would be great!!

Thanks, Kent

Welcome, Kent, and congrats on your new buy. Enjoy the ride.

Your symptoms sound as if a few things may be happening.
1. Battery either too small in capacity or not recharged enough through driving. If you have an external regulated alternator, generally, keep the rpms above 2000 for about 15-20 minutes to recharge as ext reg'd systems don't have much recharge power at low rpms. You have to think or original design in the late '60's when there was not as much electronic devices as today, so less power. One thing you can do cheaply is replace the mechanical regulator with an electronic one, Wells P/N VR715, plug and play. This will give better control of system voltage at lower rpms.
2. Battery cables may be too small of wire gauge to handle the current demand and the hotter the wire, the less current at the other end from the battery. Along with the cables, comes the connection point of the cables, they must be clean, wire brush works well. Use a minumum of 1 AWG molded cables - no clamp-on post clamps as they add another problem - good side of the road fix, but not for a permanent fix.

Battery being too small means it would be taking more time to generate enough current for the demand requested. Again, goes along with #1 and #2. Might swap in a bigger battery and compare results.
